Days 1–2: tax number and SIM

The tax number (vergi numarası) unlocks everything: rentals, utilities, banking, appliance instalments. Get it online or at the tax office (vergi dairesi) in half an hour, free, with your passport.

A Turkish SIM is issued on your passport at Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom offices. Note: a phone you brought with you must be registered within 120 days or its IMEI gets blocked on Turkish networks.

Days 3–5: housing and utilities

After signing the rental contract, transfer the electricity (CK Akdeniz) and water (ASAT) meters to your name — you'll need your passport, tax number and contract. DASK earthquake insurance is mandatory; meters won't be connected without it.

Days 5–7: home and mobility

Then comes settling in: furniture and appliances if the flat is empty, a KentKart for buses or a rental car, health insurance, learning your district. This is the stage that eats weeks when done alone.
